Jura 2018, Day 3
Bagh Uamh nan Giall, through the Gulf of Corryvreckan and across the Sound of Jura to Casaig
Day 3 saw us waking to blue skies, light winds and sunshine. Our passage through Corryvreckan was timed for slack water at 1 pm so there was no rush to get packed up in the morning, giving us a chance to explore our wee bay before we had to leave just before high tide.
We paddled north, closer and closer to the gulf, pausing for a quick lunch in Glentrosdale Bay while waiting for the tide to turn in our favour
Coming out from the flow behind Eilean Beag we entered a very benign gulf, water was flowing west already but there was barely a ripple to worry us as we made our passage at about 5 knots over the ground, watching the north coast of Jura slip past.
Round the point at Carraig Mhor, we picked up the south bound flow in the Sound of Jura and followed it down the east coast again,...
...watched from the shore by more of Jura's goats,...
...to Kinuachdrachd Harbour where we watched the seals playing in the eddy and then switched rolls as we were watched by the seals as we drifted into the harbour, relaxed, and made ready to paddle across to the mainland again.
The Sound of Jura was smooth and sparkling in the sunshine with the flow carrying us south as we crossed. Our way-point, the light on Ruadh Sgeir, came up fast as we closed on the mainland shore.
Soon we were getting our last views of Jura...
...paddling behind Carsaig Island before getting one last view across to Jura...
...and landing back in Carsaig Bay, where it had all started.
Some well earned steaks and a few beers were soon being dispatched at the Tayvallich Inn.
